Making SAD FACE's is easy. Making money is hard.

Hello.

Sorry for this sudden interruption in the transmission of the 12 DAYS OF A SAD FACE CHRISTMAS, which I hope some of you are enjoying (piffle to the rest of you), but we need to have a talk.

*coughs*

Behind SAD FACE is a human being. Me. My name is Diana and yesterday I turned 35 years old. Currently to pay for the food we (my husband, me, his daughter) eat, I work weekdays in a takeaway restaurant, and I have done so for some time now. The work is not beneath me, but it is not what I want to be doing with my life, and as such, I’d like to stop doing it at some point (mostly because the pay is really low and sometimes the customers are so horrible you just want to either cry, or punch them in the face. You get to do neither).

The SAD FACE tumblr currently has 870 followers. The SAD FACE web site has page views which I tot up and track and worry over. What I would love more than anything in the world is if just some of those people who clearly enjoy SAD FACE found it in their heart to shop at the SAD FACE Etsy shop, or from the t-shirt/mousepad selection in the shop on thisissadface.com.

I love creating SAD FACE, and I am not going to stop any time soon. What I hope is that somehow SAD FACE can be the way that I don’t have to be treated like dirt for minimum wage in a takeaway restaurant any more.

If there is a SAD FACE illustration you would like to see as a t-shirt or mousepad, or as a note card or art print, please just let me know, and I will try my best to make it happen. Also, if you have any ideas for further products you would like to see, then we should talk about it.

And if any of you want to offer me a book deal, OH GOD WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

Mostly, I want to make 2011 the most amazing year I have ever had. But to do that, I need you to support me. Yes. You.

Thank you, and all my love,

Di

  1. This is a great idea! Etsy is definitely the way to go. I adore Sad Face and have been sad that he wasn't being distributed. I actually looked at your store today and love the little ACEO's! And you could always make your own book and self-publish it. If memory serves me correctly, lulu.com let's you publish it through them and also sell it on Amazon! Something I've considered doing with my photography.

*ahem* and if you need a book layout designer, I just happen to be an award-winning layout designer of artbooks! Hehe :D

Good luck! I know you can make Sad Face a REAL BIG thing!

  2. Thank you for your support, Katie. I am probably very much going to self-publish on lulu this year. Yes most definitely. Unless a publisher comes along. Hello? Publishers? *looks around hopefully*

  3. Hi Di. I love sad face but I live in the UK. Is there somewhere to buy cards over here?

  4. Hello Hannah!

Thank you for loving SAD FACE. This revelation pleases me.

Everything in the Etsy shop ships from the UK, because that's where I am, and you can choose to see the prices in GBP, too.

  5. I feel your pain!

I've just discovered SAD FACE and your blog through your Etsy shop. I think SAD FACE is irresistibly awesome though, and I'm sure it will do well!

I've had some success on Etsy, not just with sales but with people getting in touch for commissions & things, so keep plugging away! As soon as I have more meaningful employment I will certainly be buying some SAD FACE stuff!

  6. Hi Kate. Thanks for dropping by and leaving a supportive comment. You know, I never thought about the reverse happening; of people finding SAD FACE through the shop instead of the shop being found through SAD FACE. What an excellent discovery!
